Marcus Rothering
Sumptuous Ceramics dripped with color and hand-built texture -- combined with provocative Textiles!
From Marcus Rothering:
I use hand-building techniques because the marks left during the process leave evidence of my physical interactions with clay.
When I work with clay I connect with my emotions and desires by having an interactive conversation with the clay. While I slowly build up clay coils from the bottom, my marks remain recording these secret exchanges of my feelings.
Due to working on a larger scale the most satisfying part of coil-building is that it allows me to observe progressive growth through the process.
While recently reawakening my love for fiber art with my tufting gun, I have incorporated common hand construction textile processes with clay.
About Marcus:
Marcus Rothering is a ceramic and fiber artist based in Minneapolis, MN. He received his B.A. in studio art from Metropolitan State University in 2021 and is currently pursuing his MFA at the University of Minnesota (‘25).
His large scale abstract ceramic sculptures are in discussion with the queer revolt, identity, and disruption of heteronormativity. His tufted wall rugs use humor and nostalgia to express black queer sexuality.
He has recently exhibited at Soo Visual Art Center, Minnesota Textile Center and the Mudflat Pottery School. He was recently selected for the Milchoff Artist Residency in Berlin and was awarded the Rose Fellowship to conduct research on Korean ceramics in Seoul.
